Parallels Between Architecture and Evolution

Vernacular form has evolved through a process of repetitive iteration, shaped by demanding conditions of cost, available materials and climate. The Vernacular is the insect of the architectural world – the frequency of iteration and common-ness have led to a highly specialized, if unspectacular form.

The same way humans regard themselves as above the level of insects, architects regard themselves as above vernacular form, and consequently regard it with revulsion.

Modern architecture is like a pedigree dog – far fewer iterations are used to produce something based upon one person’s aesthetic whim, with little regard for other demands of the building. Whilst outwardly this could be more appealing, the ultimate fate of modern buildings is to be put down early in their life due to a heart condition.
